Is Votivo Candle Glass Safe?Updated an hour ago
Yes. Every piece of glass we use has passed rigorous third-party safety testing to ensure it can safely withstand the heat of a burning candle.
ASTM Safety Standards
All Votivo glassware is tested and certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), an independent organization that sets safety standards for materials and products across industries.
ASTM testing for candle containers includes:
Thermal shock resistance: The glass must withstand sudden temperature changes without cracking or shattering.
Heat resistance: The glass must safely contain the heat generated by a burning candle without weakening.
Structural integrity: The glass must maintain its strength throughout the product's lifecycle.
This third-party testing ensures that when you use your Votivo candle according to care instructions, the container will perform safely from first light to last burn.
Why Glass Quality Matters
Not all glass is created equal. Candle containers need to handle:
- Direct flame heat from the wick
- Hot liquid wax pooling at the bottom
- Temperature fluctuations as the candle burns and cools
- Repeated heating and cooling cycles
Our glass is specifically designed and tested for these conditions. This is why following proper candle care matters. Burning your candle on a heat-resistant surface, avoiding cold surfaces like marble or glass tables, and stopping use when 1/2 inch of wax remains all help ensure the container performs as tested.
Can I Reuse Votivo Containers for Food or Drinks?
We don't recommend repurposing Votivo vessels for food or beverage consumption. While our glass passes safety standards for candles, it's not tested or certified as food-safe glassware.
Candle containers are designed for a specific purpose: safely holding burning candles. They haven't undergone the testing required for food contact surfaces.
What Can I Do With Empty Containers?
You have plenty of options for reusing your Votivo vessels in ways that don't involve food or drinks:
- Storage for small items (cotton balls, jewelry, office supplies)
- Planters for succulents or small plants
- Makeup brush holders
- Pen and pencil cups
- Decorative vases for dried flowers
- Bathroom organizers
Just clean out any remaining wax first. You can use the freezer method, hot water method, or oven method to remove leftover wax before repurposing.
Proper Use Prevents Problems
Glass issues are rare when candles are used correctly. To keep your Votivo candle burning safely:
Use heat-resistant surfaces only. Never place candles directly on cold surfaces like glass or marble, which can crack from temperature changes.
Avoid drafts. Drafts can cause uneven heating of the glass.
Keep the wick centered. A wick that's too close to the side can create hot spots on the glass.
Stop at 1/2 inch. When only 1/2 inch of wax remains, it's time to stop. Burning below this level can overheat the bottom of the container.
Never leave burning candles unattended. Always burn within sight.
The Bottom Line
Votivo takes glass safety seriously. Every container is tested to meet strict ASTM standards, so you can enjoy your candle with confidence. Just follow the care instructions, and your candle will perform beautifully and safely from start to finish.
